General Reservation and Use Policies
The occupants and users of Atkinson Hall play a significant role in shaping the Institute’s contributions, objectives, and culture. As such, management of public space in the building is critical to the future of the UC San Diego Qualcomm Institute (QI). To further the mission of the Institute, we have established certain principles to govern the use of the public spaces in Atkinson Hall. Use of the Atkinson Hall public spaces is open to all members of the UC San Diego campus communities, regardless of discipline, department, or unit, subject to the following:
- Users of Atkinson Hall facilities should be involved in activities that are relevant to and advance the mission of the QI or further the research, education, and public service missions of the University of California.
- Use of Atkinson Hall facilities may be subject to facilities charges (“recharge”) based on rates approved by the appropriate UC San Diego recharge and review committees.
- No activity for which registration is made through the UC San Diego Registrar is permitted to use Atkinson Hall public spaces.
- Student organizations are not permitted to use the Atkinson Hall public spaces except by department sponsorship. Departments wishing to sponsor use by a student organization must submit a letter of support for the student organization, provide project and task numbers for fees, and sign the service agreement on behalf of the student organization.
- Activities held in Atkinson Hall should have their location listed as “Atkinson Hall.”
- Activities held in Atkinson Hall should not be advertised as being sponsored by QI or UC San Diego without explicit written permission. Use of the Qualcomm Institute logo or name on signs or material must be approved by QI senior management.
- Due to the high demand for use of our facilities, we reserve the right to prioritize use according to the
following criteria:- Use by and for UC personnel affiliated with QI (as defined by one of the following criteria: projects funded directly or indirectly by QI or for projects funded by grants administered by QI or housed in Atkinson Hall”)
- Use closely aligned with the Atkinson Hall Public Spaces Statement of Purpose
- Activities that utilize the unique technical capabilities of Atkinson Hall
Final authority to approve use of facilities in Atkinson Hall rests with the Division Director and his or her delegates, including any exceptions to Atkinson Hall reservation and use policies.
Pet Policy
Qualcomm Institute does not support bringing live pets to work unless they are legally required to assist persons with disabilities. Based on broad consultation with the QI Executive Council and chairs of adjacent academic units we reaffirm the pet-free nature of the space in Atkinson Hall. While we understand that pets bring comfort and benefits to their owners, there are many individuals who do not desire pet companionship. Additionally, there are many risks associated with pet ownership that should not be transferred to employee work areas at QI: health and safety at work (e.g. interference with cables etc.); operating efficiency (e.g. hair/fur affecting computer equipment etc.); financial considerations (e.g. extra cleaning and repairs, etc.); personal considerations (e.g. noise, odors, animal bites, allergic reactions, fleas, mites and other parasites, animal excrement, etc.)
UC San Diego’s Policy and Procedure Manual (PPM) 270-5 was developed many years ago to control dogs in public areas, but these restrictions are logically extended to all indoor work settings to reduce risks, and ensure fairness and consistency. Cybersecurity
The Campus Security Initiative/Endpoint Compliance project is led by the Campus Cybersecurity Operations Group, in collaboration with It groups of each UC San Diego Department, including QI. The following summary and links provide full details and installation instructions for QI faculty and staff.
If you have a Mac, Windows, or Linux computer that needs to access trusted UC San Diego resources (on wired, VPN, or UCSD-PROTECTED WiFi), it must have the required security agents installed and properly configured. The necessary components are:
- Intune MDM for device enrollment and compliance
- Trellix EDR for active threat detection and response
- Qualys VM for vulnerability scanning and patch posture
If your device is already managed (e.g. UC San Diego-owned), it may already meet compliance. If you use only dynamic addressing WiFi, or only require access to general internet services (e.g. Zoom, email, Canvas), you might not need to install these.
If a device cannot meet requirements, there is a formal exception process (see below).
Installation and Compliance Tools
- Intune / MDM
Enrolling your device ensures it receives policies, certificates, and the required security agents. Learn about Intune / MDM at UCSD › - Trellix Endpoint Detection & Response
Trellix monitors your endpoint for malware, ransomware, and suspicious behavior. Learn about Trellix at UCSD › - Qualys Vulnerability Management (VM)
Qualys scans for missing patches, outdated software, or insecure configurations. Learn about Qualys at UCSD › - Trusted Resources
To access internal systems not publicly exposed, devices must be compliant. Non-compliant devices will be limited to Internet-Only access (cloud services, email, etc.). Learn more about Trusted Resource requirements › - Installers for Windows, MacOS, and Linux
Installer files for your operating system,
*Windows users with ARM processors are not currently supported. An exception will be required.
